Do you know what Canine lice are?
Here, you are about to learn a bit about that kind of unwanted guests that love our pets as a host.
Canine Lice infestation is becoming more common in the Bow Valley, even on healthy dogs that live in a clean environment. It is not necessary for your dog to be around other dogs in order to get canine lice. Your dog can pick up lice anywhere; it can just take in short walk around the corner or a solitary run at the dog park. It is not necessary for your dog to get lice while visiting the vet, the groomer, or the boarding facility. You should, however, be sure that when you bring your dog where there is a large traffic of dogs that this facility has the knowledge on how to deal with, and prevent, this problem safely.
You should be aware of Canine lice symptoms and know how to deal with the problem if it occurs. Canine lice could carry disease and illness's like anemia, loss of energy, behavior changes, skin irritation, among other problems.
To my knowledge, there are two types of Canine lice. One of them, biting (mallophaga), likes to feed from the skin flakes from its' host. The other kind, sucking, feed from their hosts' blood. The Canine lice usually are found around the ears, neck, shoulders and around the tail. If your dog is badly infected you may find them all over, but the main concentration will be in the areas mentioned.
Canine lice are 6 legged parasites and they look flat (if they are full of eggs they look round), gray and soft skin. The bigger they get, the darker they look, and grow to about one twelfth of an inch (0.5mm) in length. They keep themselves from falling off by holding the dog's hair. The opposite of ticks and fleas, canine lice don't move much, and when they do, they are extremely slow. Usually, when they find a perfect host they like to stay there. Canine lice lay their eggs, up to 100 at a time, on the dog's hair. When the eggs are full they look brownish, after hatching they look flat and white. Canine lice lifespan is around 21 days, from hatching until death, so the speed at which they can infest a dog is surprising.
Are you itchy yet?
Sometimes when a dog scratches, we regularly assume that the dog has some type of food allergy or skin disorder and we never think or take the time to check the spot that our dog just finish scratching.

In describing how disgusting Canine lice are I need to say that of all of the parasites, Canine lice are the easiest to treat. It can take about two weeks to eradicate them if you treat them properly, and you must treat the problem safely. There are many products that easily eliminate them from your pet, as well as products to treat your home. If your dog is very matted, you may need to remove the mattes before treating the problem. You must not apply these products to your dog's genitals, around the eyes, mouth and nose, inside ears, and skin sores. If your dog has any skin condition or sores, I recommend you to consult your vet to apply those products safely. Of course, you should consult your vet with any concerns you may have regarding the health and safety of your pet
